INTERNSHIPS & VOLUNTEERS - (1) Welcome

Welcome to GTD's Internship & Volunteer Program. Thank you for your interest in being a part of TEAM GTD and desiring to be more deeply involved in what God is doing in and through this ministry. In addition to being an ambassador for Christ, our Interns & Volunteers play a vital role in the accomplishment of GTD's mission and are representatives of this ministry's values. Therefore, we consider the character of a GTD Intern & Volunteer no small matter. We are looking for Interns & Volunteers who are sold out for Jesus and display a consistent "all-weather" walk with Him. We're not looking for perfect people, but we are interested in Christians that strive for excellence, display consistency, spend daily time with God in prayer & Bible study, avoid mediocrity & compromise, love people, love adventure, love overcoming fears & overcoming self-imposed limitations, love to have fun, celebrate life, and want to live for God's glory. Here's a summary of the top 10 things we look for in a GTD Intern & Volunteer:

3 THINGS YOU NEED
TO KNOW B4 U APPLY

Many people don't realize the amount of work and self-sacrifice that goes into providing group events. It's a great blessing to be a part of, but it's not a vacation. We miss sleep, we miss meals, we miss the comforts of home-family-friends for extended periods of time, we work non-stop, we feel the constant pressures that are inherent with all that we have to provide (safety, leadership, spiritual influence, great attitudes, mass meals, transportation, accommodations, activities, back-up plans, etc), we face daily obstacles that have to be overcome (it may be a broken tent zipper, a faulty showerhead, a flat tire, poor weather, injuries, our own personal selfishness, a challenging attitude in a participant, etc), and we often miss out on the "fun events" that the participants are enjoying. That's not a list of complaints... it's a reality check. To be a GTD Intern is no romp in Disney World; it's a badge of honor. In fact, it's these very challenges that make the accomplishments so enjoyable. Don't think of each GTD event as just a marathon; think of it as a marathon of hurdles. And once you cross that finish line, if you've run in such a way as to get the prize, the sense of accomplishment and blessing is impossible to describe. To be used by God to make an eternal impact in someone else's life... not too many joys can compare to it.

One thing we have found through the years that distracts & destroys what God's attempting to do on an event is a Volunteer or Intern who brings "drama" with them. "Drama" is what we refer to as RED FLAG high-maintenance issues that require a lot of unnecessary attention... such as being self centered, hot-headed, impatient, bitter, jealous, obnoxious, argumentative, sexually suggestive, lazy, overly opinionated, a complainer, or lacking self control, lacking motivation,... and on and on. While drama may be a crucial ingredient for an episode of MTV's Jersey Shore it's a deadly poison to any ministry, any family, any close relationship, and society as a whole. Drama results from areas in our lives that have not been allowed to go through God's maturing process. Drama is an indication of immaturity. It's great for capturing attention (much like a train wreck), but it will suck the life out of all those around. What a lot of people don't understand is that God's invitation to follow Him is also an invitation into a pressure cooker. God wants to put loads of pressures in our life so that it reveals our depth of need for Him and exposes our self destructive immaturities. Once exposed, God wants to cause us to joyfully persevere through them until we become mature, complete & not lacking (James 1:2-4). These RED FLAG "drama areas" need to be grown through prior to becoming an Intern or Volunteer, otherwise the devil will use them on events to divide and conquer. It's that simple. That's not to say that we are looking for "perfect people", because then none of us would be eligible for ministry. We are, however, looking for spiritually mature (or maturing) Christians who are capable of walking into a high pressure situation full of spiritual warfare and keep their eyes fixed on Jesus while avoiding being pulled down by the devil, the world, & the flesh as they shine for Christ.

  • "Abstain from all appearance of evil." 1 Thes 5:22
  • "But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God's holy people." Eph 5:3
  • "Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification. Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food. All food is clean, but it is wrong for a man to eat anything that causes someone else to stumble. It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or to do anything else that will cause your brother to fall." Rom 14:19-21
Part of being sold out for Christ is obeying God's Word and fleeing temptation and moral compromise, but it's also the willingness & desire to avoid or leave situations that may appear as embracing the world's standards. There are a lot of grey areas when it comes to following Christ: Can Christian's drink alcohol? Should Christian's watch R-rated movies? Sexually speaking, how far is too far when dating someone? Many Christians choose to see how close to the line they can get without "going over", but my experience with that type of believer is that they tend to go over-the-line again, and again, and again and then try to redefine where "the line" is as they push it further and further away from God's standards. To be completely transparent and straight forward, we are looking for Interns & Volunteers who are willing to forego personal liberties in Christ in order to:

1) Preserve integrity,
2) Prevent stumbling blocks, and
3) Protect themselves from inching closer & closer to going over the line.

We are looking for Interns & Volunteers who choose honor over instant gratification. For example, if you like to go out drinking or clubbing with your friends, or you like to tell an off-color joke once in a while, or cheat on your homework, or steal a little bit here-and-there, or sleep around a little bit, or drop the f-bomb when your Christian friends aren't around, or "lose your cool" with people who irritate you, and so on, then you aren't going to be a good fit in this ministry. GTD is all about celebrating life and having a God-awesome time, but it's absent of the world's influence... and it's my job, my call, and my intent to keep it that way. We put together events to give people a taste of what life is like when they are away from a corrupt culture as they take time to seek God first. We don't put together God-awesome events and throw in an off-color joke or buy a six-pack of beer to sit around the campfire or sneak off to make-out with a new found interest. We pour our hearts & life into this ministry because God has invited us to be a part of something He's doing to impact lives for eternity. We have a responsibility to protect it from compromise. And as a GTD Intern or Volunteer this will be your responsibility as well.
